Flashing Check Engine Light: What to Do Right Now

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

A flashing check engine light means the engine is misfiring badly enough to damage the catalytic converter. Reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration, and pull over safely — then have the car diagnosed before driving further.

Why a flashing light is urgent

Unburned fuel enters the exhaust and ignites inside the catalytic converter, overheating it. Converters cost $1,000–$2,500 to replace.

What causes a flashing check engine light

Failed ignition coils, worn spark plugs, clogged fuel injectors, vacuum leaks and low compression are common.

Steps to take

Turn off A/C and heavy electrical loads, drive gently to a safe stop, and call a mobile mechanic who can diagnose on the spot.
