What to Check Before Buying a Used Car: Mechanic's Checklist

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

Before buying a used car, check the vehicle history report, scan for stored and pending trouble codes, inspect for leaks, frame or flood damage, test brakes and suspension, and take a 15-minute test drive. A professional pre-purchase inspection ($129–$199) catches what you'll miss.

Paperwork and history

Verify the VIN matches the title and check Carfax or AutoCheck for accidents, title brands and service records.

Under the hood and underneath

Look for oil and coolant leaks, rusted brake lines, frame repairs and silt in crevices (flood sign).

The test drive

Test cold start, shifting, braking, steering and listen for noises at highway speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a seller clear codes before I arrive?

Yes — that's why we check readiness monitors too.

Is an inspection worth it for a cheap car?

Yes; one hidden issue can cost more than the inspection.
