Battery or Alternator? How to Tell Which Is Failing

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

If your car starts with a jump and keeps running, the battery is likely the problem. If it dies shortly after a jump, or the headlights dim while driving, the alternator is likely failing. A running voltage below 13.5V points to the alternator.

Battery symptoms

Slow cranking especially in the morning, clicking, and needing frequent jumps.

Alternator symptoms

Dimming lights, battery warning light while driving, electrical glitches, a whining noise or burning smell.

How we test both

We load-test the battery and measure charging voltage and ripple with the engine running.
