Car Won't Start? Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

If your car clicks rapidly, the battery is weak — try a jump start. A single click points to the starter. If it cranks but won't start, suspect fuel, ignition or a sensor. Total silence often means a dead battery or ignition switch issue.

Rapid clicking

The starter solenoid is getting some power but not enough to crank. A jump will usually work.

Single click, no crank

Often a failed starter motor or corroded battery terminals.

Engine cranks but won't start

Check for fuel delivery, spark and sensors like the crankshaft position sensor. A scan tool narrows it down.

When to call a mobile mechanic

If a jump doesn't work or the car dies again, we can test the battery, alternator and starter on-site and replace the failed part the same day.
