How Long Does a Car Battery Last? Lifespan by Climate

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

A car battery lasts 3–5 years on average. In hot climates like Phoenix, Las Vegas and Houston, expect 2–3 years because heat speeds up internal corrosion. Get it tested yearly once it's 3 years old.

Why heat shortens battery life

High temperatures accelerate grid corrosion and electrolyte evaporation inside lead-acid batteries. Cold weather simply reveals the weakness.

Warning signs of a failing battery

Slow cranking, dim lights at idle, a battery warning light, swollen case, or corrosion on terminals.

Standard vs. AGM batteries

Vehicles with start-stop systems require AGM batteries, which handle deep cycling better and typically cost more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my battery's age?

Look for a date sticker or code on the case, e.g. 4/23 means April 2023.

Does driving short trips hurt a battery?

Yes, it doesn't fully recharge between starts.
