How Long Do Brake Pads Last? Mileage by Driving Style

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

Brake pads typically last 30,000–70,000 miles. City driving, heavy vehicles, towing and hilly terrain shorten life; highway driving and ceramic pads extend it. Replace pads when they reach about 3 mm of friction material.

Average brake pad lifespan

Front pads wear faster than rear because they do most of the braking. Many vehicles need fronts at 40,000 miles and rears at 60,000+.

What wears pads faster

Stop-and-go traffic, steep hills like those in San Francisco and Pittsburgh, towing, and aggressive braking.

Pad types compared

Organic pads are quiet but wear fast; semi-metallic grip well but are noisier; ceramic pads last longest with low dust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I replace all four pads at once?

Replace both sides of an axle together; front and rear wear independently.
