7 Signs Your Brakes Need Service (and What Each Means)
Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience
The short answer
Squealing or squeaking
Most pads have a metal wear indicator that squeals when the friction material gets thin.
Grinding noise
Grinding means the pad backing plate is contacting the rotor. Rotors get damaged quickly and stopping distance increases.
Vibration or pulsing pedal
Uneven rotor thickness or deposits cause pulsing; rotors may need resurfacing or replacement.
Soft or spongy pedal
Air in lines, a brake fluid leak or a failing master cylinder can cause it. This is a safety-critical issue.
Pulling, warning lights and burning smells
Pulling points to a sticking caliper. ABS lights need a scan. A burning smell can mean a dragging brake.
