What Causes a Clunking Noise When Driving Over Bumps?

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

A clunking noise over bumps is most often caused by worn sway bar links, ball joints, strut mounts or control arm bushings. Loose exhaust components and worn shocks can also clunk. Have it inspected — worn steering parts can fail suddenly.

Ball joints and tie rods

Worn ball joints clunk over bumps and can cause loose steering. Failure can cause loss of control.

Struts and mounts

Worn strut mounts clunk when turning the wheel or hitting potholes.
