Why Is My Car A/C Blowing Hot Air? 6 Causes

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

Car A/C blows hot air most often due to low refrigerant from a leak. Other causes are a failed compressor clutch, a bad cooling fan, a clogged condenser, a faulty blend door actuator or an electrical fault.

Refrigerant leaks

O-rings, hoses and condensers develop leaks. UV dye testing locates them.

Compressor and clutch failure

If the compressor clutch doesn't engage, no refrigerant circulates.

Airflow and controls

A failed blend door actuator or cabin air filter clog can mimic A/C failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a car A/C recharge cost?

$149–$250 for R-134a, more for R-1234yf.

Are DIY recharge cans safe?

They can overcharge and damage the compressor; professional service is safer.
