Why Is My Car Overheating? Causes and What to Do

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

Cars usually overheat because of low coolant from a leak, a stuck thermostat, a failed water pump, a clogged radiator or a broken cooling fan. If the gauge climbs, turn off the A/C, turn on the heater, pull over and shut the engine off.

Common causes of overheating

Coolant leaks from hoses or the radiator, a thermostat stuck closed, a worn water pump impeller, or a failed electric cooling fan.

What to do immediately

Switch the heater to full hot, pull over, turn off the engine and wait at least 30 minutes before checking coolant.

Risks of driving hot

Overheating can warp cylinder heads and blow the head gasket — repairs that can exceed $2,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
