When Should You Replace Your Tires? Tread Depth and Age

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

Replace tires when tread reaches 2/32 inch (the legal minimum in most states) — 4/32 inch is safer in rain and snow — or when tires are 6–10 years old regardless of tread. Check the DOT date code on the sidewall.

Tread depth tests

The penny test: if you can see all of Lincoln's head, tread is under 2/32 inch. Tread wear bars also indicate limits.

Tire age

Rubber degrades with time. The last four digits of the DOT code show week and year of manufacture.

Uneven wear

Inner or outer wear suggests alignment issues; cupping suggests worn shocks.
