What to Do When Your Car Breaks Down on the Highway

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

If your car breaks down on the highway, signal and move to the right shoulder, turn on hazard lights, stay buckled in the car if traffic is heavy, and call for roadside help. Only exit on the side away from traffic.

Get safely off the road

Signal, slow gradually and steer to the shoulder or an exit if possible.

Make yourself visible

Use hazards, and at night interior lights. Use reflective triangles only if safe.

Call for help

Share your highway, direction and nearest mile marker or exit.
