How to Jump-Start a Car Safely (Step by Step)

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

Connect red to the dead battery's positive, red to the good battery's positive, black to the good battery's negative, and black to bare metal on the dead car. Start the good car, wait 2–3 minutes, then start the dead car and remove cables in reverse order.

Before you start

Park the cars close but not touching, turn both off, and check that the dead battery isn't cracked or leaking.

Connection order

Following the correct order prevents sparks near the battery, which can vent hydrogen gas.

After the jump

Drive 20–30 minutes to recharge, then have the battery and alternator tested.
