Can You Drive on a Tire With a Nail in It?

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

You can usually drive a short distance on a tire with a nail in the tread if it's holding air, but get it repaired within a day. Don't remove the nail. If the nail is in the sidewall or the tire is losing air fast, use the spare.

Is it safe to drive?

A nail can partially seal the hole. Drive slowly and avoid highways until repaired.

Repairable vs. not

Industry standards (USTMA) allow plug-patch repairs in the tread area only, up to 1/4 inch.

Mobile tire repair

We can plug-patch the tire in your driveway or swap on your spare in about 20 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a plug alone safe?

A combination plug-patch from inside is the proper repair.

How much does a tire repair cost?
