Do Electric Cars Need Maintenance? EV Service Checklist

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

Yes. Electric cars skip oil changes but still need tire rotations, brake fluid and caliper service, cabin air filters, coolant for the battery thermal system, wiper blades and periodic 12-volt battery replacement.

Tires and alignment

EVs are heavy and torquey, so rotations every 6,000–8,000 miles help.

Brakes

Regenerative braking reduces pad wear but rotors and slides can corrode from disuse.

12-volt battery and fluids

The 12V battery powers computers and locks; it typically lasts 3–5 years. Battery coolant needs periodic service per manufacturer.
