How Often Should You Change Synthetic Oil?

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

Most cars using full synthetic oil need an oil change every 7,500–10,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. Follow your oil life monitor and shorten the interval for towing, short trips or extreme heat.

Why synthetic lasts longer

Synthetic oils resist breakdown at high temperatures and flow better when cold, meeting API SP and ILSAC GF-6 standards.

When to change sooner

Turbocharged engines, frequent short trips, towing and dusty environments.

Checking oil between changes

Check the dipstick monthly; some engines consume oil normally.
