Serpentine Belt Replacement: Signs, Cost and Mileage

Written by the ASE-certified technicians at Auto Repair Shops America · 15+ years of hands-on repair experience

The short answer

Replace a serpentine belt every 60,000–100,000 miles or when you see cracks, glazing or hear squealing. If it breaks, you lose the alternator, power steering and often the water pump — the car can overheat within minutes.

What the serpentine belt does

One belt drives the alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump and often the water pump.

Warning signs

Squealing on startup, visible cracks, fraying, or a battery light.

Replacement

It's a quick mobile job, often done with the tensioner and idler pulleys.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a serpentine belt the same as a timing belt?

No, the timing belt is inside the engine and synchronizes valves.

Can I drive with a squealing belt?

Short-term, but replace it soon.
